County Commissioners deny special land use permit

Polk County Commissioners at their monthly meeting Tuesday night voted against a request by the owners of Hightower Falls in the Antioch Community for a special land use permit. Property owners Stephen R. and Carol Cook requested the special land use permit to hold a two day motorcycle festival at the property. Hightower Falls is currently a private retreat facility used for such things as wedding receptions, civic clubs, churches, and so forth. The idea for the festival came when Cook was asked about holding a family activity that would provide entertainment for motorcycle enthusiasts. Cook told Commissioners that before the special use application was made, he visited his neighbors to pitch the idea and to figure out any noise or traffic concerns. However, 45 people showed up in opposition to the plan when Cook presented the plan to the Planning and Zoning Board meeting. Such concerns by those living around the area included disturbing the wildlife, too much traffic, among others. Commissioners voted down the request citing those concerns.
