Several fires keep local crews busy Thursday

Thursday was a busy day for local firefighters and Georgia Forestry officials as numerous grass and brush fires popped up in and around Polk County.

Late Wednesday, firefighters in western Paulding County were battling a wildfire near the Paulding County airport, that has reportedly burned over 120 acres, but was mostly contained as of Thursday.

Thursday morning, Polk County firefighters were called to several small grass fires around Johnson Lake Road and Judkin Mill Road.

A brush fire scorched several acres at the corner of Pine Bower Rd. and Akes Station Rd.

Firefighters and forestry officials responded to that fire that was near a couple of structures and created a fire break, effectively containing the blaze.

Crews are dousing hot spots and monitoring the area for any flareups.

Georgia Forestry crews are also watching a large wildfire in eastern Alabama, beneath the west side of Treat Mountain that could spread into Georgia.
