Local teams set to play for state championships

Two local area teams will be vying for state titles this weekend at the Georgia Dome in the Georgia High School Association Football State Championships.

The Rome Wolves (12-2, 7-1) stamped their ticket to the Dome after upsetting undefeated Stockbridge in the semifinals at Barron Stadium 28-21.

Rome faces a tough challenge in Atlanta on Friday against the Buford Wolves, a team that is no stranger to state championship games.

For the first time in school history, Rome will play for a state title in the 5A State Final.

The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes, led by the highly recruited junior quarterback Trevor Lawrence, will blow into the Georgia Dome Saturday as they try to defend their state title from last year.

The Canes easily won the Region 5AAAA championship, and marched through the state playoffs, most recently defeating Mary Persons in the semifinals 38-17.

Cartersville will face the Thompson Bulldogs for the 4A State Title on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. at the Georgia Dome.

You can watch both games on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
