Cedartown woman dies in wreck

Police are investigating a single vehicle wreck that claimed the life of a Cedartown woman and severely injured another.

According to Cedartown Police Chief Jamie Newsome, emergency officials were dispatched to the intersection of Cave Spring Road and Evergreen Lane at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Upon arrival, they discovered that a 2003 Ford Taurus traveling westbound on Evergreen Lane had run a stop sign at Cave Spring Road and veered off the road a struck a tree head-on, causing significant damage to the vehicle.

The passenger of the vehicle, identified as Mildred Champion, 81, of Cedartown, was pronounced dead on the scene at 3:00 p.m. by Polk County Coroner Tony Brazier.

Edna Wood, the driver of the Taurus, was rushed to the Floyd Medical Center emergency room with severe trauma and is listed in serious condition, according to Brazier.

The Cedartown Police Department is leading the investigation.
