Cedartown Police release statement regarding juvenile shooting incident

PRESS RELEASE

At approximately 2:55 a.m., Friday, Aug. 8, 2014, a call came in regarding a 13-year-old being treated at Polk Medical Center for a gunshot wound.

Upon arrival, officers located the injured juvenile and another un-injured juvenile at Polk Medical Center.

Shortly thereafter, officers received a call from GEO Specialty Chemicals in Cedartown reporting that several of their employees’ vehicles had been broken into.

Items listed as being stolen from those vehicles included several handguns.

After viewing GEO security footage and speaking with key individuals, officers determined that five juveniles, including the two located at Polk Medical Center, had broken into the vehicles earlier that morning and removed the items.

The juveniles carried the stolen items into Peek Park, located on College Street in Cedartown.

Police have determined the park was the location where the 13-year-old was shot.

At this time, officers believe the shooting was accidental.

The injured juvenile is currently being treated for non-life threatening injuries at an area hospital.

The other four juveniles, all between the ages 13 and 14, were apprehended and detained. All are charged with entering an auto.

The parents of the juveniles were issued City Court citations for parental responsibility violation.
