Polk County Sheriff’s Deputy on paid administrative leave after fatal shooting

A Polk County Sheriff’s Deputy has been placed on administrative leave as an investigation continues into the circumstances of an officer involved shooting Friday night on Hillside Drive.

According to Polk County Deputy Coroner Tony Brazier, 18-year-old Levi Isaac Weaver was pronounced dead in the emergency room at Polk Medical Center Friday evening after a call was made to Polk 911 of a heated domestic dispute at the Hillside Drive residence.

A Polk County Sheriff’s Deputy was the first to arrive on the scene when Weaver allegedly lunged at him with a knife and baseball bat in hand.  The deputy then drew his weapon and shot him in the chest.

The deputy has been identified as Polk County Jail Administrator Jerry Shellhouse, who has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.

Brazier said per protocol in this type of incident, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in.

Preliminary results from the autopsy should be available any time now.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the shooting could take several weeks to complete.
