Standoff at Floyd County apartment leads to arrest

The Rome/Floyd SWAT team was called in Thursday following a suspect who barricaded himself inside an apartment and allegedly threatened to burn it down.

Floyd County Police originally responded to the call of a woman who had been cut by an assailant’s knife at the Ashton Ridge apartments on Callier Springs Road just east of Rome.

When police arrived, the suspect refused to open the door and had blocked the entrance to the apartment unit.

Following an hour of unsuccessful negotiations, the SWAT team forced their way inside where they had to subdue the suspect with a tazer device.

Police arrested Christopher Nashon Garrett on several felony charges including aggravated assault, false imprisonment, three counts of felony obstruction, arson, criminal damage to property, and third degree cruelty to children.

He was transported to the hospital to be treated for self-inflicted knife wounds and will be taken to the Floyd County Jail upon his release.
