When people think about July 4th, the thought of fireworks comes to mind.
While many may decide to take in one of several fireworks show across the area this weekend, others may decide to purchase some of their own.
Anyone who buys fireworks are encouraged to use them with caution and to only use those that are legal in Georgia.
Georgia’s recently passed law states that these types of fireworks are allowed:
- wire or wood sparkler of 100 grams or less of mixture per item
- other sparkling items which are non-explosive and non-aerial and contain 75 grams or less of chemical compound per tube or a total of 200 grams or less for multiple tubes
- snake and glow worms
- trick noise makers which include paper streamers, party poppers, string poppers, snappers, and drop pops each consisting of 0.25 grains or less of explosive mixture
Cedartown Fire Chief Sammy Stephens says if you choose to use fireworks, take proper precautions.
“Main thing is to use common sense, enjoy it, enjoy the holiday, enjoy it from a distance,” said Stephens. “Different areas are doing fireworks shows, we always recommend going to those shows.”
According to a study, about 7,000 people across the country are treated in emergency rooms every year for fireworks-related injuries, mostly involving children.
“We’ve been fortunate that we haven’t had that many incidents in the last few years. We tend to have more incidents during the New Years holiday.”
Chief Stephens also said that the fire department will be available all weekend for any emergencies.
