March 2nd Storm Update (No. 1)

Posted in News Desk, Weather by Jordan McLendon
Mar 03 2012

A strong storm system swept across north Georgia on Friday, heralding a series of tornado warnings and caused the collapse of a home in Haralson County.

Haralson County Fire Chief Brian Walker said late Friday night that a person was injured in the collapse and was trapped for about an hour by debris. No other serious injuries were reported. Walker said power lines and trees were down throughout the northern part of the county.

According to the National Weather Service, it appeared a possible tornado had moved from Haralson into Paulding County.

Local authorities were surveying damage from the line of storms late Friday night. There were reports of trees knocked down in Cobb County.

Approximately 10 homes and the roof at an elementary school were damaged in Paulding County. There were no immediate reports of any injuries.

The storms caused damage to several planes at the Paulding County Airport, and the spillage of a few hundred gallons of fuel.

There were upwards of 1,400 customers within the state without electricity until shortly after midnight, according to Georgia Power.

There were also no immediate reports of damage in Floyd County, which had also been under a tornado warning, according to county emergency management.

There have been unconfirmed reports of tornadoes in the Felton community as well. There were several trees, power lines, and road signs down in that area.

A stretch of US Highway 27 was closed in both the north and south directions between Buchannan and the Felton community.

There were also several other unconfirmed reports of tornadoes and funnel cloud activity in the Polk County area.

As soon as the National Weather Service and local weather agencies confirm these reports, we will bring those details to you as soon as they become available to us.

We encourage all Polk County residents to pay close attention to weather conditions and follow safety precautions and guidelines during the event of severe weather.
