Rockmart woman killed in wreck

A Rockmart woman died after the car she was riding in ran off the road to avoid hitting a dog.

According to Polk County Coroner Tony Brazier, 31-year-old Miranda Thomas of a Rockmart address was pronounced dead from severe traumatic injuries at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta just after midnight Tuesday.

The vehicle was traveling down Antioch Road when they swerved to avoid a dog in the road. The vehicle then overcorrected, spun out, and hit a ditch. The collision caused the vehicle to overturn, while striking several trees before coming to a stop.

Miranda Thomas was found pinned under the vehicle when emergency responders arrived and was rushed to Polk Medical Center and then airlifted to Grady, where she later died.

Her husband, Samuel Thomas, who was driving only suffered minor injuries.

The couple’s infant daughter Sophia was in a car seat in the back. She was not seriously hurt.

The Georgia State Patrol is conducting the investigation.
